Mid Derbyshire Labour Party has begun the process of selecting a candidate to challenge sitting Tory MP Pauline Latham at the 2015 General Election.

Applications are now sought in accordance with the party’s national electoral procedures and Mid Derbyshire Labour Party members will make their choice at a hustings meeting in the constituency on Sunday, March 9.

Mid Derbyshire was contested as a constituency for the first time in 2010 and was won at that election by Conservative Mrs Latham.

Labour’s candidate in second place was Derby City councillor Hardyal Dhindsa who now chairs the Mid
Derbyshire Labour Party and serves as Derbyshire’s Deputy Police and Crime

Secretary of Mid Derbyshire Labour Party Helen Clark said: “Hardyal fought a brilliant campaign in 2010 and really flew the flag for Labour in Mid Derbyshire. He did the party proud!

“We’re now really looking forward to selecting somebody who will build on his achievement, taking Labour’s excellent national policies to the towns and villages that make up this diverse constituency, whether that’s in Spondon or Belper, Borrowash or Allestree.

“Ed Miliband’s message on the cost of living, energy prices and taxation policy resonates with people in Mid Derbyshire as elsewhere and the promises of theTories in 2010 have a hollow ring to people.”
