March to wake up the trees

More than 80 people, including many children, joined a noisy Wassail procession around Waingroves Community Woodland on Saturday. The annual Wassail festival is a Middle Ages tradition to ‘wake up’ the trees and wish them good health during the coming year. Usually taking place in orchards, the people of Waingroves use the Wassail to acknowledge what the community woodland provides in terms of fresh air, relaxing walks, bird watching, fuel for log burners and social events.
