Neglected Zak is now one cool customer

Cool customer Zak is the latest entry for our Pets on Parade competition. However, life wasn’t always so rosy-tinted for the German Shepherd cross.

Rescued at eight months old, owner Kathryn Beardmore, of Highwood Avenue, Belper said he was neglected and in a “terrible state”.

Now aged 10, Zak has had many happy years and still enjoys a bit of agility, although he now has to take things slower than he once did.

His loveable garden shot was the first in a spate of comedy pictures submitted for the contest this week.

Jess the Springer Spaniel - belonging to John and Jackie Hall, of Newbridge Road, Ambergate - sported a flat cap.

Meanwhile, Gill Bilbie’s catTinkerbelle was doing her best impression of a meerkat and fellow feline Tim, belonging to Deborah Howe was caught sleeping on the job.

They are all in with a chance of winning six months’ worth of free pet food, with second place receiving a three-month supply and third place a Husse hamper. Send your entries in jpeg format by email to, or hard copy prints to Pets on Parade, Belper News, 8 Heanor Road, Ilkeston, Derbsyhire, DE7 8ER, or drop them off at our community postbox at News corner, top of King Street, Belper.

Just two pictures per pet and you MUST include your full name, address and day and evening contact numbers. The competition is only open to cat and dog owners.

We will run entries that make the final at a later date, when readers can vote for their favourite. Usual Belper News competition rules apply.
