New fine for church damage

THE owner of a listed building in Belper has been fined for knocking down part of an historic stone wall at a Grade II listed former church.

Steven Pople of Shaftsbury Crescent in Derby appeared in court for a second offence after being prosecuted in February for failing to carry out essential works to the former Pottery Methodist Church and Schoolroom on Kilbourne Road in Belper.

Pople pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court and was ordered to pay fines and costs of £2,765 for the offence. In February Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court ordered him to pay £2,475 in fines and costs. The action relates to an offence committed in June 2008. The council asked him to return the historic stone wall, which was partially demolished to make way for a caravan, to its previous state.
