A sixth form which will serve the Amber Valley area has been launched by two secondary schools in the borough.
The Ripley Academy and John Flamsteed Community School have joined forces to create Amber Valley Sixth Form, a post-16 provision for young people aged 16 to 19.
Students who attend Amber Valley Sixth Form will be based at The Ripley Academy, which currently has extensive post-16 facilities, and there will be opportunities to work at John Flamsteed Community School, in Denby.
Parents, carers and students attended the launch of the sixth form at the Ripley Academy where they met teaching staff Carey Ayres, the principal of The Ripley Academy, and Lisa Walton, headteacher of John Flamsteed Community School.
There will be another opportunity to find out more about the venture at an open evening taking place at The Ripley Academy on October 7, between 6pm and 8pm.
Rob McDonough, chief executive of East Midlands Education Trust, said that Amber Valley Sixth Form would provide a high quality source of academic excellence in education.
He said: “The East Midlands Education Trust, with Ripley Academy, aims to provide the highest possible quality of teaching along with the finest resources to ensure students are academically challenged and supported in equal measure.
“We are delighted to be working with John Flamsteed Community School to deliver this vision.”
Carey Ayres, principal at The Ripley Academy, said she was looking forward to welcoming students from across Amber Valley.
She said: “As we embark on this venture, working with colleagues from John Flamsteed Community School, I envisage the Amber Valley Sixth Form as a place to support, encourage and inspire more young people from across the region.
“Whether you are from The Ripley Academy, John Flamsteed Community School or any other secondary in the area, you can be assured of a warm welcome, high quality teaching, an exciting enrichment programme and second-to-none support at the Amber Valley Sixth Form.”
Lisa Walton, headteacher at John Flamsteed Community School, said: “This is an exciting venture led by vastly experienced, highly qualified staff striving to ensure that the Amber Valley Sixth Form is not only a transformational part of your life story but becomes a beacon of excellence within the Amber Valley area and beyond.”
