Do you know someone special who deserves the honour of switching on the Christmas lights in Belper this year?

Last year, the button was pressed in the Memorial Gardens by the town mayor, Councillor Deborah Biss, Andrea Fox from the Drop Inn Youth Centre, BBC Radio Derby presenter Andy Potter and Santa.

And the search is now on to find out who will follow in their footsteps and flick the switch as part of The Big Christmas Event 2014.

The festive extravaganza will take place on Friday, November 28, starting at 5.45pm

People should send in their nominations and the reason why they think this person should be selected either by email to or via letter to Belper Town Council, St John’s Chapel, The Butts, Belper DE56 1HX. The closing date is Friday, October 31.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Belper Christmas Food & Real Ale Festival are also under way. What started out three years ago as the Belper Christmas Food Festival is growing annually and now features more than 80 stalls. The popular event will take place on Sunday, December 7, from 10am to 3pm.

A spokesman for Belper Town Council said: “The event attracts thousands of visitors to the town and gives local producers a unique opportunity to promote their wares directly to the public.

“Visitors are able to taste a huge range of products on sale, ranging from real ale, cheeses, meats and cakes. It is a perfect day out for food lovers and a showcase for our local producers.”
