A COMMUNITY group that strives to maintain and improve parks in Belper is in the running for a prestigious award.
The Friends of Belper Parks has beaten off competition from around the UK to be in with a shout of winning a Future Friendly award – and possibly £10,000.
Now the groups needs your votes.
The Friends are first up against Melbourne Area Community Wood in Stanton by Bridge in the the regional finals. Winning that section will get them £1,000 and a place in the national final against 11 other regional winners.
They maintain and improve Belper Parks Local Nature Reserve (LNR), which is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site. They have turned five acres of long course tussock grass into a wildflower meadow which is now full of wildlife.
The Future Friendly awards scheme is a nationwide search for communities and individuals committed to making a difference by promoting sustainable living through their actions.
TV presenter Gabby Logan said: “The Friends have clearly demonstrated their commitment to protecting the environment through their fantastic sustainable efforts.”
