Flipping good fun was had by around 50 competitors who took part in the traditional Winster Pancake Races.

Children, mums, dads and senior citizens competed for honours in 14 events including running and walking races in which contestants had to flip pancakes at least three times. There was also a biggest tosser category, with prizes awarded for most elegant tossing and greatest number of tosses.

Geoff Lester, one of the organisers, said: “Usually the primary school are the main participants in the races. This year it was half-term and I was worried that we wouldn’t have much a turnout – it was the reverse, we had a good turnout with plenty of children to participate. We had a good number of senior school children because it was half-term holiday. They mostly go to Highfields or Lady Manners, so usually there are none of them present.”

Participants from toddlers to pensioners competed in Tuesday afternoon’s races along the village’s cordoned-off Main Street. Geoff, who compered the event, added to the fun by dressing as a policeman. He said: “I used the costume in the village carnival one year and people seemed to think it was fun so I’ve continued wearing it at the races for about five years.”
