A Derbyshire woman has knitted more than 800 woolly hats for babies at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Jean Griffiths, 66, of Mastin Moor, has been busy during lockdown making the colourful creations to keep the heads of newborns warm.

Generous Jean said: “I retired last year as a domestic cleaner at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

“In my downtime I like to do a bit of knitting and have done for many years.

“I have a box full of wool – or should I say had a box full of wool!

“I couldn’t think of anything better to use it for other than to give something back by making hats for the newborn babies as they are always needing them.”

She added: “I have taken around 300 in so far and have a bag of 500 plus more to take when it’s safe to do so.”
