Workers putt their way to success for charity

Staff at Derbyshire company Lubrizol raised almost £250 to help fund research into heart disease when they transformed their office into a crazy golf course for a sporting challenge with a difference.

Workers in the company’s global communications department laid down the gauntlet to colleagues elsewhere across the site, inviting them to take part in three fundraising golf challenges in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

The company, based in Hazelwood near Belper, has signed the BHF up as its chosen charity for 2019 and 2020 and the challenge, which was also accompanied by a cake sale, was the latest in a series of fundraising activities.

The golf challenges including a closest to the hole challenge – whereby staff had to putt a ball along a corridor and get it as a near to a marker as possible – and a competition to complete three holes on a Wii games console.

Members of the global communications department also created three mini-golf holes beneath their own desks, where staff had to guide the ball in amongst a series of obstacles and sink it into three holes in as few strokes as possible.

More than 40 people each paid £1 to take part in the challenge in total, with three winners emerging from the competition – including senior research chemist John Durham, who had to win a nail-biting six-way play-off to win the crazy golf round.

Amy Turner, global communications placement student, who helped organise the event, said: “We raised £248 in all from the golf challenge and cake sale, which we are delighted with.

“The golf was very successful and it got quite competitive.

“There were a lot of bragging rights at stake and so people took it seriously, which meant we had some very good scores across the three competitions.”

The golf challenge is the latest event the company has undertaken in its support of the British Heart Foundation, which company members voted to support as its chosen charity over 2019 and 2020.

Past events have included wearing red for Valentine’s Day and joining colleagues from other centres to bag up unwanted clothes and DVDs to be distributed to BHF shops.
