Prisoner killed in HMP Nottingham named as Long Eaton man

John Coxall, 80, of Long Eaton, was found dead on Thursday in Nottingham Prison while serving a six-month sentence

Nottinghamshire police confirmed that John Coxall, 80, was found dead in Nottingham Prison yesterday, and a 24-year-old prisoner has been arrested.

The Ministry of Justice said the man had been formally identified by Nottinghamshire Police.

A spokesperson added: "He was found unresponsive in his cell yesterday. Staff tried to recuessitate him and paramedics were called, but he was pronounced dead at 5pm yesterday.

The police investigation is ongoign so we are unable to comment further."

The man, of William Street Long Eaton was jailed in October for harassing a Jewish neighbour, and had previously been imprisoned after breaching a restraining order and damaging the neighbour's car.

Mr Coxall, of William Street, was jailed for 30 weeks in October at Southern Derby Magistrates’ Court, Derby, for breaching a restraining order on September 1 and October 6.

He had also been jailed in December for the same offence. He had been banned from going to the woman’s home, which is near his house, after admitting harassment towards her.

The court was told that within the space of a year, he broke the terms of the order eight times.
