Pullman carriage destroyed by fire at Ripley railway

A 140-year-old railway carriage was destroyed by fire over the weekend.

Flames were spotted coming from the 1873 Pullman carriage at the Midland Railway Centre in Butterley, at 9.45pm on Saturday night.

It took fire fighters from Ripley and Alfreton two hours to tackle the blaze in the rare carriage, which is only one of three left in the world.

A police spokesperson said it is not yet known how the fire was caused.

The Pullman carriage was due to be restored.
