Students have been finding out what life will be like for them at the new Amber Valley Sixth Form.
The new sixth form serves the Amber Valley area and is being provided by The Ripley Academy and John Flamsteed Community School in Denby.
Students who attend Amber Valley Sixth Form will be based at The Ripley Academy, which currently has extensive post-16 facilities, and there will be opportunities to work at John Flamsteed Community School.
A taster day was held at The Ripley Academy to give students an idea of what they can expect when they join Amber Valley Sixth Form.
Ellie Nugent, 16, is a student at John Flamsteed Community School who attended the taster day.
She said: “We went into a range of typical lessons which were just half an hour tasters including psychology, biology, chemistry, English literature and sociology. It’s been really good and we have all been impressed.”
Steve Richardson, Sixth Form director of learning, said it was great to welcome students from The Ripley Academy, John Flamsteed and other schools to the taster day.
He said: “We think that what we can offer in Amber Valley Sixth Form is quite unique because it’s a mix of A-levels and vocational qualifications. We also offer great pastoral care via tutor groups and enrichment sessions.
“All of our students move on to education, employment or training with half going on to university and we are seeing more and more students taking up apprenticeships now.
“It’s been great to see students from our school and other schools today and we hope that we’ve given them a taste of what they can expect if they join us.”
Helen Fozard, vice principal at The Ripley Academy, said there were a wide range of qualifications on offer at Amber Valley Sixth Form.
She said: “At the moment our students are moving on to a wide range of destinations including employment, apprenticeships and to the country’s top universities.
“With a range of A-levels and vocational qualifications we hope that there will be something for everyone at Amber Valley Sixth Form and will provide the grounding for any student whatever their ambition.”
