Ringing in the Olympics

A group of Derbyshire bellringers are set to perform a special composition on Friday to ring in the Olympic Games.

The bellringers will be performing Five Rings Triples, composed by Howard Skempton, at five Derbyshire churches.

The tune is one of 20 pieces of music, each lasting 12 minutes, commissioned to mark the Olympic Games and will also feature centre stage in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The performances will take place at 2pm at Wirksworth’s St Mary’s Church, at 3pm at St Peter’s Church in Belper, at 3.45pm at St Alkmund’s Church in Duffield, at 5pm St Mary the Virgin in Ilkeston, and at 8pm at St Mary and All Saints in Chesterfield.

Gill Hughes, of the Derby Diocesan Association of Church Bellringers, said: “Why not come and have a go? If you are interested in learning to ring or returning to ring after a break, please email learn2ring@derbyda.org.uk.”  For more visit ww.derbyda.org.uk
