DELIGHTED scouts were shocked when they scooped a £1,000 top prize in an online draw.

The Heage Scout Group had typed a code number on to the Verm-X website — and were surprised to win a £2 instant prize.

But, two weeks later, the group received a phone call to say they had also won first prize in a monthly draw.

What the scouts hadn’t realised was that by entering the code number, they had unwittingly entered into the Verm-X monthly prize draw.

Verm-X provides products to control internal parasites in animals. The scouts were using the site because they had rescued some hens and needed the right product to keep them well.

Now the scouts’ gardening project is set to profit from the unexpected cash windfall.

The project started two years ago and is run by the group to show children how to cultivate and grow their own food. They started with vegetables, then moved on to chickens and bees. Later this year the group hope to introduce pigs to the project.

A spokesman for the scouts said: “It was a great surprise and such a boost. The need for new beekeeping equipment is high on the list, along with covered working areas for the children to use during the planting season and in bad weather.”

Philip Ghazala, managing director at Verm-X, and the firm’s area sales manager Niki Phelps delivered the cheque last week.
