CROWDS gathered at either end of a street in Belper last night, August 18, after a semi-naked man ran amok.
The man, named locally as boxer Gary Beardsley, was spotted emerging from his house on Short Street at about 3.10pm.
Witnesses called police because he was said to be walking around with not many clothes on.
Officers arrived and cordoned off the street at both ends. The man then went into his house and smashed an upstairs window.
He began throwing objects through the window to the street below, including a golf bag, drinks cans and a bin.
One witness said: “He’s a tough lad so I think the police were wary.”
A crowd gathered at either end of the road while police attempted to negotiate with the man.
After emerging from several windows in the house, the man came out of his front door once more, shouting at officers, before going back in.
Eventually, by 7.40pm, the man cooperated with officers, who led him out of the house and took him to hospital.
A police spokeswoman said: “At 3.10pm police were called to a house on Short Street in Belper after concerns were raised about the safety of one of the residents.
“During the afternoon the man became agitated and refused to leave the premises.
“He threw a number of items out of his house, so the road was closed to protect members of the public.
“At 7.40pm the man was detained by police under the Mental Health Act and was taken to hospital.”
