Ten years’ charity work

A FORMER teacher at the Ecclesbourne School in Duffield has completed ten years of charity work for impoverished children in Fiji.

Margaret Long and her husband Peter decided to set up the charity, Children of Fiji, after visiting a friend on the Pacific island in 1999.

It helps provide pre-school education for children in Fiji.

One of the most alarming sights that compelled Mrs Long to set up the charity was children crossing a fast-flowing river to get to school.

Mrs Long, who now lives in Dorset, lived in Duffield, Belper, and Allestree in her time in Derbyshire. She said: “When the water was high, the children couldn’t get to school, but there were also several children that drowned.”

Famous Fijian golfer Vijay Singh even selected Children of Fiji as one of his chosen charities at an annual tournament.
