Members of a musical theatre group are to put their best foot forward for a sponsored walk in tribute to one of their former members who died of cancer.

Belper Musical Theatre are joining forces with the family of Linda Furnival to raise cash at a moonlight walk at the end of this month.

The group will donate the cash raised to Treetops Hospice - which cared for Linda in the final days of her life.

Mrs Furnival was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 but after successful treatment enjoyed 10 cancer-free years. During this time, she joined Belper Musical Theatre (BMT) where she made close friends and became a much-loved member of the group.

However, in 2008, the cancer returned and spread to her right lung and she died in June 2012, 14 years after her initial diagnosis.

Now Mrs Furnival’s daughter Chloe is joining sister Kay Grant and daughter Fiona Grant, along with 11 ladies from Belper Musical Theatre, to take part in a sponsored walk on the second anniversary of Linda’s death. The Treetops Hospice Moonlight Walk is a 10k or 5k sponsored walk around Derby on June 27. Money raised is spent providing respite and end of life care for adults like Linda.

Linda’s sister, Kay Grant, said: “When I say I’m doing the Moonlight Walk for my sister, everyone wants to sponsor me. My happiest memory of her is her laughter, and all the daft things she used to say. We called them ‘Lindaisms’, all her quirky methods for doing something perfectly. We could make a book of them!”

Jennifer Lewis, fellow BMT member, said: “We loved her to bits, and that’s why we’re doing the Moonlight Walk.”

Sarah added: “Treetops is great for all those people who need that respite. The support they offer to families is fantastic. I’m sure we’ll be doing the Moonlight Walk for many years.”

Rosie Coates, community fundraiser at Treetops Hospice, said: “It’s a pleasure to have Linda’s family walking together alongside the ladies of Belper Musical Theatre.I’m sure it will be a very emotional night for them.”
