belper’s Wakes Day has been cancelled by the town council – because of a lack of volunteers.

The bumper event was due to go ahead on Sunday, June 5, at Belper Meadows sports ground, but has now bitten the dust.

Children from Belper’s primary schools were due to take part in a wide range of sporting activities. Family games, bouncy castles, a barbecue and stalls were also due to entice crowds.

But a disappointed spokeswoman for Belper Town Council said: “We have had to cancel the Wakes Day event due to a lack of volunteers to help run it.”

Meanwhile, the town council is on the hunt for pieces of land around the town that they can turn into allotment spaces.

Town Mayor Cllr John Nelson said: “We are looking for land that we can turn into allotment land for people in Belper.

“We have a big waiting list of people wanting allotments.”

If you can help, contact the council on 01773 822116.
