TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Conservative leader of Amber Valley Borough Council who has died.

Richard Beardsley died aged 75 following a long illness. His funeral was on Friday at Christ Church, Belper.

He led the then Amber Valley District Council between 1976 and 1980. He represented Belper South and Milford, where he also served along with Duffield as a county councillor until the mid-80s.

Current council leader Cllr Stuart Bradford, said: “Richard was a strong leader and represented his wards and Amber Valley with pride and distinction. Many of the challenges we face today were present during the Seventies so I can begin to appreciate how testing his time in office would have been then. My thoughts and prayers are with Richard’s family. The council flag on Ripley Town Hall rightly flies at half mast and a minute’s silence will be held at the next council meeting as a mark of respect to honour a former leader who was well-respected and highly regarded in the political community.”
