Belper’s Strutt Street public toilets have been targeted by vandals again.
New ultraviolet (UV) lighting to deter drug use was removed within hours of being installed on Saturday January 28.
The public conveniences are managed by Belper Town Council, who took over responsibility for them a few years ago after Amber Valley Borough Council had decided to close them.
Following the latest incident of vandalism, a town council spokesperson said: “The council has now reinstated the original lighting and is looking at a vandal proof UV light option.”
They added: “The toilets are checked three times a day by council staff.
“Often the staff find the toilets in a poor state, either with evidence of drug use and/or drinking, or in a insanitary condition.”
The spokesperson urged any members of the public who use the Strutt Street toilets and are concerned regarding any issues, to report them to the town council immediately by calling 01773 822116.
