Driver sat on the roof of his car paddles to safety in Bakewell after Storm Christoph flooding
A motorist in Bakewell stranded in flood water climbed on to the roof of his car before paddling to safety.
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) said the incident took place overnight as heavy rain caused by Storm Christoph sent water level rising in Derbyshire, causing flooding in some areas.
Swift Water Rescue team volunteers were deployed to Bakewell Fire Station on standby for flood rescue on Wednesday evening after a major incident was declared by Derbyshire County Council due to flooding.
A spokesperson said: “Fortunately, no evacuation of homes was necessary.
“The only incident was a car stuck in flood water with the driver sitting on the roof."
The spokesperson added: “As a combined team of MRT rescuers arrived at the scene, they found that the driver had self-rescued by wading through the water to safety.
“River levels are forecast to peak at lunchtime today.”
No fewer than 39 flood warnings remain in place across Derbyshire.
