POTENTIAL female pugilists will be pleased as punch that a women-only boxing group has been set up in Belper.
Friends Helen Constant and Tracy Macdonald have joined forces to launch Pink Punch in the town.
The group provides ladies of all ages and abilities with high intensity training inspired by traditional boxing techniques.
The inspiration behind the group started when Helen, who lives in Belper, and Tracy, from Derby, decided that mixed boxing classes did not work because of the natural advantage men have as a result of their height and weight.
The pair believed there was a demand for a safe, effective and progressive work-out in a women’s only environment, and so Pink Punch was born.
Participants use gloves and pads and can expect to burn between 600 and 1,000 calories an hour, say the duo.
Helen, who has more than 20 years of experience in the fitness industry, said: “We think it’s extremely important that Pink Punch has a very friendly, welcoming approach so that our classes are accessible to all ladies of all ages.
“We want women to come and take part in a powerful, no-nonsense work-out, but without worrying about their size, fitness levels or disabilities.
“We ensure that everyone’s personal needs are always catered for.”
She added: “There’s no scary skipping and punch bags, no six-foot tall blokes built like tanks, just girls training hard, getting fit and having fun.”
Tracy added: “We have recently been working alongside the current British Super Flyweight champion Jules Winter, who is helping us to develop a Pink Punch Academy and raise the profile of women’s boxing.
“With the Olympics around the corner, there has never been a more exciting time to be involved in the sport.”
Pink Punch’s newly-launched Belper class is on Mondays at the Vanessa Millar School of Dancing on Derwent Street.
The class takes place between 7.15pm and 8.15pm and costs £5 to attend. For more information, visit www.pinkpunch.co.uk.
Helen and Tracy also run a class at the Evergreen Club, Cornhill, Allestree, on Saturdays at 10am.
