Belper GKR Karate club bring home the medals

THREE students from Belper Go-Kan-Ryu Karate club entered their first regional karate tournament last weekend in Birmingham and came home with four medals.

Mitchell Downing, 11, set the ball rolling when he won bronze for kata in the 10-11 year male and female 6-4th kyu category.

Emma Bramley, 20, then won bronze for kata and also bronze for kumite in the 16-20 year female 6-4th category whilst Melvin Downing, 44, also won bronze for kumite in the veteran male 35-44 year 6-4th kyu category.

GKR Karate is a large international karate club founded in Adelaide, South Australia in 1984 by Robert Sullivan. There are now clubs in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and USA.

This year the UK is hosting the 2007 GKR World Cup on June 2 and 3 at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham.

There has been a GKR Karate club in Belper since August 2005.

Classes are held at Belper community rooms on Sunday mornings from 10.30am until 12 noon and also Friday evenings between 6 and 7pm and 7.30pm to 9pm.
