Second silver medal for teenage boxing star Jade Ashmore

Teenager Jade Ashmore has picked up a silver medal while representing England at the Great Britain Elite Three Nations tournament in Dunfermline, Scotland.

The 18-year-old student lost out in the 51kg final to Welsh boxer Lynsey Holdaway from Merthyr. But considering Holdaway was more than ten years her senior, it was still an excellent achievement by the Chesterfield fighter.

It was also Ashmore’s second silver in a month, having finished runner up to five-time national champion Lisa Whiteside at the England National Championships in Liverpool just four weeks earlier.

“In Dunfermline, I lost against a very experienced opponent, who was 30-plus years old,” said the 2020 Olympic hopeful, who represents Chesterfield Amateur Boxing Club and is on the elite boxing programme at Bradford College, whose past students include Olympic champion Nicola Adams.

“Obviously, I’m a bit disappointed, but I’m only 18 and I’m doing my best against these seasoned internationals.”

Ashmore’s silver was one of five won by the England team who also collected an impressive tally of seven gold medals and four bronzes.

Among the gold medallists was Ashmore’s Bradford College colleague Cory O’Regan, who won the 60kg category.

Both are on the radar of Great Britain bosses and have been invited to attend a training camp later this month.

Ashmore only made the step-up up to senior boxing this year, having won a bronze medal at the European Youth Championships in Hungary last year.
