Bowlers find it tough as Denby unbeaten run ends

Denby CC 1sts’ unbeaten start to the Derbyshire Premier League season came to an end on Saturday at the hands of visitors Lullington Park.

The match at the Copper Yard featured a centurion on each side but in the end the team from South Derbyshire gained the upper hand and won the encounter by nine wickets.

The result means that Denby are sixth at the halfway stage of the season approaches for them, although they have a game in hand on most of the teams around them and the sides behind leaders Swarkestone are quite closely packed.

Lullington Park won the toss and asked their hosts to bat first.

Openers Alexander Eyre and Cameron Bancroft got their side off to a good start with a partnership of 78 before Bancroft was dismissed for 49.

Eyre was then involved in stands of 59 with Greg Cork (23) and 43 with Joe Greenhalgh (18).

He was still there at the end of his side’s 50 overs, having contributed an unbeaten 102 to his side’s score of 215-4.

George Chapman took two wickets for the visitors.

In reply, there was an early success for Fraser Kirk when he dismissed Sam Eaton for 12 but from then on it was all about the Lullington Park pair of James Doherty and Andrew Goodwin.

They combined in an unbeaten stand of 196 to see their side to a nine-wicket win.

Doherty made an unbeaten 112 and Goodwin’s contribution was 62 not out. Victory was achieved in the 48th over and Doherty hit 14 fours during his innings.

Meanwhile, Denby’s 2nds were in action against Staveley Welfare in Division Two and lost a close-run game by two wickets.

Finally, Denby 3rds lost to Ockbrook & Borrowash by 73 runs in Division 8N.

This weekend, the 1sts are at home to Matlock, the 2nds are at Sandiacre and the 3rds are at Swanwick Hall.
