Captain Daniel Burgoyne struck a terrific unbeaten 88 as struggling Denby 1sts came within five balls of earning a losing draw at second-placed Spondon 1sts.
Burgoyne’s anchor role saw him strike four sixes and seven fours in his 127-ball stay at the crease.
Denby totalled 217 for eight from their 50 overs in the Derbyshire County League Premier Division match.
In reply, the high-flyers got off to a slow start, but picked up the run-rate to earn a six-wicket win off the first ball of the last over.
Burgoyne helped to rebuild the Denby innings after the loss of opener Jake Smith cheaply, adding 79 for the second wicket with opener Chris Fletcher, who struck five boundaries in his 43.
The captain shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 53 with Peter Burgoyne, who scored his 34, including six fours, at faster than a run a ball.
Daniel Burgoyne also found support from Ameer Ahmed, adding a further 32 for the fifth wicket.
Just four batsmen made double figures for the visitors.
In the reply, accurate early bowling by James Parkin, two for 49 from 15 overs, and Ahmed, one for 60, restricted the Spondon openers.
Oliver Baum took 37 balls for his 16 and Michael Mitchell was at the crease for 89 balls for his 22.
But when they were dismissed Spondon’s run-rate increased and victory came in the final over.
Peter Burgoyne also picked up a wicket for Denby, taking one for 58.
Denby earmed six points, which lifted them off the bottom of the table and level on points with Rolleston, who picked up five points in a defeat at home to Wirksworth and Middleton. Both sides are 11 points from safety.
On Saturday, Denby entertain Ockbrook and Borrowash.
