It was a testing week for the local men’s sides, with most teams struggling to find any sort fof form.
In South Derbyshire League Division Two, Hazelwood hosted Swadlincote Catholics A but found their visitors in fine form.
The visitors escaped with an aggregate 177-159 win, earning them a 10-4 points victory.
Hazelwood’s winners came from Jim McEwan (21-6), Phil Meacham (21-10), Terry Palmer (21-17) and Chris Brierton (21-18).
Having won at Allestree earlier in the season Hazelwood were hoping to clinch a double in the return match.
However, their luck was all out as they fell to another reversal.
Allestree took the aggregate 190-180 win ensuring a 9-5 points win,
Hazelwood’s winning cards were recorded by Andy Waumsley (21-14), Jim McEwan (21-15), Eric Mousley (21-18), Ken Kirk (21-19) and Phil Meacham (21-19).
Also in Division Two, Belper Pottery had two difficult away fixtures.
First, they went to Sitwell Arms where only John Marshall (21-12), John Smith (21-19) and Cliff James (21-19) were able to win in a 9-3 defeat.
On Friday night Pottery travelled to Kings Newton and this time went down 2-10.
Granville Curzon (21-7) and Simon Beetlestone (21-19) were the only Pottery bowlers to get the better of the opposition on what proved to be a tough evening.
In Division Three Belper Meadows travelled to title favourites Washland A and recorded three winners in a 145-190 aggregate defeat.
Mick Nelson and Terry Fletcher, both 21-14 and Derek Storer (21-15) recorded winning cards.
The following evening saw a big improvement as the Meadows’ men got seven winners at Spondon taking the aggregate 202-170 win and the points 11-3.
There were wins for Terry Fletcher (21-12), Wayne Birch and Mick Frost (both 21-13), Phil Weightman (21-15), Mick Nelson and Graham Sheldon (both 21-17) and Alan Ward (21-20).
In Belper Saturday Singles League Division Three, Belper Meadows B caused an upset against high-flying Denby by recording six winners. The narrow 177-174 win ensured they took the points 8-4.
Wins for Jack Laven (21-9), Delia Ratcliffe and Val Hitchcock (both 21-14), Phil Weightman (21-16), Janet Fletcher (21-17) and Neil Ratcliffe (21-20) helped the Meadows’ cause.
In Belper Ladies League Division Two, Belper Meadows won 7-3 away at Breadsall, with wins for Betty Morley (21-3), Janet Fletcher (21-12), Val Hitchcock (21-14), Delia Ratcliffe (21-16) and Jane Simmonds (21-19)
