Late heroics earn a draw

Belper Amateurs 2nd XI 154-9 drew with Darley Dale 2nd XI 217-7 (19 pts)

Belper won the toss and elected to field on a bright and breezy day up at the Packhorse Ground.

Mark Green (3-50) and Simon Buzzard (3-58), opening the bowling, claimed a wicket each as the Darley Dale innings got off to a steady start.

Veteran A. Topley (79) held firm in the face a hostile opening spell from Buzzard and found able support from G. Ward (50) who scored his first ever league 50.

This partnership was to provide the mainstay of the innings until Ward fell to a slower ball from Dean Jones (1-23).

Wickets continued to fall but the runs also kept flowing for Darley Dale to finish on a good final score of 217-7.

The Belper response was a little more sedate as Billy Deeming (9) batted with great concentration while the wickets fell from the other end and a nasty injury to Richard Jones (7*) meant he had to retire hurt.

At 78-4 P. Nightingale (36*) came to the crease and played an innings which not only guided the team past the 150 mark, but also allowed them to bat out the remaining overs with the recovered final man Richard Jones back at the crease. Amateurs are still searching for the elusive victory that will raise them out of the relegation zone and this week they travel to second-placed Whitmoor.

They currently have 116 points from their 13 games in the Division 7N season.
