Sunshine all round as cricket season gets off to a bright start

The sun was out and the sound of leather on willow could be heard once again as our cricketing sides returned to competitive action at the weekend.

The first round of matches in the 2013 Derbyshire Premier League and County League took place less than a month after the region had been covered in a blanket of snow, but the weather was kind for the opening weekend.

In Play Straight Cricket Division One of the Derbyshire County League, Duffield made a fine start with an eight-wicket win in a high-scoring with Stainsby Hall.

Tom Roe made an unbeaten century for Duffield and Tagenarine Chanderpaul - son of Derbyshire and Windies star Shivnarine - made 78 on his Stainsby Hall debut. and Ambergate drew at Quarndon.

In the ‘the follow on’ Division Two, Denby drew with Sandiacre Town).

In CN Wright (Codnor) Butchers Division 5N, Denby beat Chesterfield Barbarians by the handsome margin of 102 runs and Duffield beat Sandiacre Town by 93 runs

The results in Geoff Cox Cars Division 6N included a 6o-run defeat for Belper Meadows against West Hallam WR, while Belper Amateurs beat Stainsby Hall by five wickets to make a positive start to their campaign.

In the Boolers Division 8N, Belper Amateurs drew with Ockbrook & Borrowash and Denby lost to Swanwick Hall by six wickets. Belper Meadows lost to Pilsley by eight wickets. In the Marston’s Pedigree Division 9N, Ambergate drew with West Hallam and Duffield beat Clowne Town. (3pts) by 133 runs.
