Bayley Cup, first round
Breadsall 1st XI (217 all out) beat Belper Meadows 2nd XI (58 all out) by 159 runs
BELPER Meadows seconds fell to a not too unexpected Bayley Cup first round defeat at Breadsall firsts.
Sam Dutton (40) and Mitchell Bradley (40) got the Breadsall outfit off to a very good start but tight bowling from the opening bowling partnership of Dan Kelly and Matt Wheatcroft kept the score down.
Matt Fairey (3-32) got the much needed breakthrough with a fine leg-side catch from captain and keeper on the day Pip Nightingale, a couple of quick wickets fell leading the young Belper side to think we could spring a surprise win against a team from a higher league.
However, strong hitting from N Oates (44) pushed the momentum again in Breadsall’s favour.
The Belper bowlers carried on working hard and got the final wickets they deserved but the damage had been done leaving Belper with a lot to chase.
The Meadows chase never really got going, with the Breadsall bowlers (D Hughes 3-8 and J Holmes 3-26) showing why they are in a higher league compared to this youthful Meadows side.
After a resilient fight from the batsmen within just 25 overs all the Meadows wickets had fallen meaning Breadsall progress in to the next round of the cup.
Belper Meadows firsts also suffered a first round cup exit, as they went down by six wickets in the Marston’s Smooth Trophy.
Rolleston 187-4 [44 overs] (A Britton 32, T Rutter 84*) beat Belper Meadows 185 all out [43.5 overs] (C Whiteley 46, T Williscroft 40, M Cox 34, M Haynes 3-64, T Yates 4-18) by six wickets.
