A DERBYSHIRE golf club has become the latest one in the county to be awarded the prestigious GolfMark accreditation.
GolfMark is a national scheme run by the English Golf Union and English Women’s Golf Association which recognises junior and beginner friendly clubs. It confirms that Shirland Golf Club provides a safe and friendly environment for all its members.
Shirland Golf Club, based at Lower Delves in Shirland, near Alfreton, offers subsidised coaching to junior members as well as having an active schools outreach programme.
The club has also been recognised by The Golf Foundation as a Golf Roots Centre, delivering Tri Golf to youngsters in local schools.
Taster sessions are also available for schools and community groups, as well as groups of adults.
Shirland Golf Club have a very comprehensive programme to encourage young golfers and now offer junior membership from only £60 a year, or just over £1 a week for unlimited golf.
The club was assessed earlier this year in Coaching Standards, Child Welfare and Duty of Care, plus equal opportunities for all junior players and beginners.
To reach the required standards the club had to provide evidence of issues including focused plan to develop all members of the junior section, provide a safe environment for all players, have all it’s key personnel CRB-checked, staff had to be trained in “Equity in Coaching” and “Safeguarding and Protecting Children”, offer a fun and welcoming environment for junior golf to flourish and offer access to coaching and competitive golf.
The award will be proudly displayed at the club and will provide parents with the reassurance that the needs and safety of children have been thoroughly considered.
GolfMark also qualifies Shirland Golf Club for ClubMark, which is the Sport England mark of high quality junior clubs.
Nigel Furniss, development officer for the Derbyshire Golf Partnership, said: “Derbyshire Golf would like to congratulate Shirland Golf Club on being awarded GolfMark. This demonstrates the club’s commitment to encouraging junior golf and creating opportunities for people to participate and enjoy the game of golf. All those involved in reaching this achievement deserve a vote of thanks.”
