A tough week for the Nailers

Belper Town were left licking their wounds after a difficult week that started with a narrow home defeat against Stamford the previous Saturday, followed by midweek exit from the Doodson Sport League Cup and a disappointing set-back at Market Drayton.

It was a much changed side that faced Premier Division Worksop Town at Christchurch Meadow last Tuesday evening and although the Tigers demonstrated silkier skills during certain parts of the game, the Nailers were well worth their extra time opportunity when the scores finished at 1-1 after normal time.

Then came the defining moment early in the first period of extra time when Richard Adam’s seemingly perfectly fair tackle inside the area was controversially judged as an infringement, and a rather surprised Worksop side were handed a penalty that they duly converted.

It was a blow that the Nailers never recovered from and consequently were eliminated from the penultimate knock out competition available this to them season.

Belper still have the Derbyshire Senior Cup to play for although the draw has been unkind to them as they have drawn cup holders Derby County at home on a date to be announced.

The ties are to be played in the week commencing December 12.

The full draw is:

Chesterfield v Heanor Town

Ilkeston FC v Dronfield Town

BELPER TOWN v Derby County

Mickleover Sports v Graham Street Prims

Buxton v Long Eaton United

Gresley v Alfreton Town

New Mills v Matlock Town

Blackwell MW v Pinxton

Belper Town renew their acquaintance with Carlton Town this Saturday (Nov 26) after meeting them three times in quick succession earlier in the season, and Sutton Coldfield Town are the visitors next Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

Meanwhile Belper’s reserve side made progress in the Derbyshire Divisional Cup after beating Ashbourne Town 3-2 last weekend, and this coming Saturday sees them return to league action away to Teversall FC reserves.
