MRA Division Two
Allenton United Res 2
AMBERGATE can count themselves desperately unlucky not to have any points reward from this top of the table clash.
‘Gate were well up for the game from the off, winning the battles and playing some fine football.
They got their reward mid-way through the first half when Stevenson broke clear and beat his man before coolly slotting home his eleventh goal of the season to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.
Ambergate continued to probe and looked resolute at the back as Allenton tried to find a way back into the game.
However, the home side then showed why they are top by equalising against the run of play right on half-time.
A cross from the left fell to an unmarked striker who found the net.
That was the first lapse of concentration from the visiting defence and it was fully punished.
The equaliser was a body blow for Ambergate who began the second half sloppily. In contrast, it had improved Allenton’s tempo.
Ambergate’s defence regained their solidity and stood firm as the visiting midfield began to regain their grip of the game.
It was a really good contest between two well-drilled sides battling for promotion and it always seemed that one more goal would prove to be the winner.
Unfortunately, it fell to the home side as Tipton’s headed back pass on 85 minutes fell short and the onrushing striker beat goalkeeper Hooley to the ball. Hooley brought the striker down and handed Allenton a penalty.
The striker dusted himself down and finished it well to give Allenton all three points.
This Saturday Ambergate are home to Wirksworth Ivanhoe at Heage, kick-off is 2pm.
