Players and officials from Bargate Kestrels FC enjoyed a day to remember recently when they paid a visit to the home of Derby County.

The club was only founded in May but within four months had been awarded with the FA Charter Standard club status.

The FA Charter Standard is an official FA programme designed to recognise and reward clubs that are well-run and committed to child protection, quality coaching and safety.

A total of 71 Bargate Kestrels followers, consisting of staff, team members and supporters, attended Derby County with Blackpool where the club was formally presented with the award on the pitch.

Becky Salt, who is secretary and child welfare officer at the family-run club, explained: “18 of our children then had the role of escorting both Derby County and Blackpool players out of the tunnel and onto the pitch, an experience that I feel will never go away!

“We are extremely proud to have achieved this FA Charter Standard so early on and feel it is an incredible achievement.”

She continued: “We decided we wanted to form our own club as we felt it would be nice to have a junior football club in Bargate, as there was not so long ago. Currently we have one under nines team, consisting of a regular team of ten, along with two reserves and we play matches on Sundays at Derby Racecourse and are part of the Derby Junior Football League.”

During the winter, the team trains on Friday nights between 5pm-6pm at Ripley Leisure Centre, returning back outdoors during March to either Sandbed Lane or Bargate Road recreation ground.

These training sessions are not only for the team. There is also a regular stream of youngsters aged 6-9 who receive football coaching.

All staff are DABS checked and team manager Wayne Buxton is qualified to FA Level One.

The club is affiliated with the Derbyshire FA and is also on the lookout for new players to join the team for the 2014/15 season (current school year four). There is limited space for anyone who may be interested in receiving football coaching.
