Goals from Reuben Wiggins-Thomas and Alex Steadman earned Belper Town a 2-1 victory over a Burton Albion side as they continued their series of pre-season friendlies ahead of the start of the new league season.

Nigel Clough’s Burton were far from full strength, only three days before they launched their new Championship campaign at Nottingham Forest. But they still fielded a lot of talented youngsters, looking to impress the manager, so The Nailers can be well pleased with their efforts and the way they dominated.

Wiggins-Thomas almost opened the scoring from the edge of the six-yard box in the 14th minute, only to be denied by a fantastic save. But he did strike just before half-time when receiving a quick throw from Dominic Allen, turning his marker superbly and firing into the back of the net.

Burton hit back immediately when a long ball forward landed at the feet of Dylan Garnett, who turned one or two defenders too easily and saw his shot take a slight deflection before rolling into the corner.

But Belper’s disappointment at conceding such a soft equaliser was soon turned into delight as they bagged what proved to be the winning goal in the 56th minute. This time a wonderful ball from second-half substitute Laurence Constable fell perfectly to Steadman, who slid the ball under the ‘keeper.

The Nailers continued to have most of the ball and controlled most of the half. The best of the rest of their chances fell to Constable, who controlled a through ball from Steadman and unleashed a shot that looked destined for the top left-hand corner until the Burton goalie produced another top-class stop.
