MRA Division Two
PROBABLY the performance of the season gave Ambergate a deserved victory last Saturday and sent them above rivals Newton.
A fairly even first half saw Ambergate battling against the wind, but they defended stoutly and kept the ball well to get in to half time with a goalless scoreline.
With the weather elements now in their favour for the second half, Ambergate pressed Newton back and terrific pressing from Stevenson saw the Newton keeper gift the ball to Tom Aston who coolly slotted into the empty net to give gate the lead.
And the visitors soon extended their lead, Craig Tipton firing in a free kick from no less than 40 yards!
It was constant Ambergate pressure by now and they sensed they could score more goals and kill the game.
And the third came after more hesitant defending allowed Shaun Bestwick to sneak in and square to Shane Linthwaite to tap home.
Chances kept coming for ‘gate as Newton struggled to find a way into the game.
Shaun Welch made the game safe after good work down the right from Aston and Stevenson.
The only blot on a great day for Ambergate came in the last minute when Magill gave away a penalty and Newton got a consolation goal through Paul Holmes.
This Saturday, Ambergate are away again, this time to third-placed Melbourne Dynamo Reserves.
Kick-off is 2.30pm.
