A bid to welcome women players into the thriving, new sport of walking football has been backed by Belper player Janet Fletcher.

Janet and husband Terry have been regular supporters of the walking football sessions at the Willows Sports Centre in Derby for more than a year now.

“It has been very enjoyable,” says Terry. “But although Janet copes well with playing against men, a few other women have tried and have not been able to cope.

“However, Derbyshire FA is now rolling out a session dedicated to females only, and they would like help in getting players down there.”

The inaugural session is to be held at the Willows on Tuesday next week (February 9) between 12 midday and 1 pm, and it is open to female players of all ages and abilities.

Lauren Mellor, of Derbyshire FA, says: “The first week is free, so come and give it a go to see what the fuss is all about!

“As well as trying walking football, you can meet other people, have fun and join the others for a cuppa aftewards.

“For just £3 in subsequent weeks, participants will get an hour’s walking football, followed by a complimentary tea or coffee in the bar area. The sessions will take place indoors and consist of a gentle warm-up before getting into a game.”
