Chesterfield boss James Rowe has come out in support of injured midfielder Joe Rowley.

It comes as the 21-year-old is set for a long spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury he suffered in the first half of the goalless draw against Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.

The midfielder, who came through Town’s academy and made his debut in 2017, is out of contract in the summer.

On Rowley’s injury, Rowe told the DT: “It is not a great one. He has hurt his hamstring and it looks like quite a high grade. We will have to wait and see what the scan says. It doesn’t look great. It is a shame for him.”

He added: “He is very disappointed but I believe in him as a player. He has got a future here.

“I said he has got a part to play in the next six months and he has shown that in the games he has had an impact on.

“Today, he was running at defenders, getting down the side and pressing. He was excellent.”

The clash at Meadow Park was very even and the Blues will be satisfied with their night’s work at last season’s play-offs semi-finalists.

“I thought we were excellent for the first 20 minutes,“ Rowe said. "Really, really good. Very good football.

“Their goalkeeper going down injured, the five minute break, affected our momentum and Joe Rowley getting injured affected the top of our box.

“I thought we refocused again at half-time and we restricted them to nothing. They only had one shot on target all game. You have got to be pleased with that.

“I thought the first 15-20 minutes after half-time, we should score.

“It was just our final little bit tonight that made us get a point and not three points but all in all I am really pleased with a point on the road.

“They are so tired in there because after the 10-day isolation, to have three games in six days, is an outstanding effort and I thought we were really strong at the end."
