Tonight (Thursday), Belper United will welcome local rivals Holbrook St Michaels in the second round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

Both sides had excellent victories in their first round clashes. Holbrook St Michaels beat fellow local rivals Holbrook Sports from the East Midlands Counties League 1-0 while Belper United beat a very good CML North side Clay Cross Town 4-1.

Holbrook St Michaels are currently second bottom of the CML South but this weekend broke their duck at the 17th attempt with a 3-2 win over Mickleover RBL. Chris Saunders led the way with two for the Saints, Alex Statham scoring the third.

Belper United, in third place, consolidated their spot in the top group after beating Hucknall Town 3-1. Luke Crosby, Sam Vickers and Ben Summers were the United scorers.

Earlier in the season, the sides met in the league for Belper United’s first game at Christchurch Meadow with United winning 7-0. Goals came from Joe Wheeler (two), Shaun Smith (two), Kyle Wadsworth, Ben Summers and Luke Crosby.

Belper United manager Steve Watson said: “I can’t imagine that we will get the same result this time. Holbrook St Michaels have finally got a deserved win in the league and beat higher opponents in the first round, and they will be out for revenge.

“I am sure if we play to our capabilities we can get a positive result but this is the cup and anything can happen. However, this is a fabulous opportunity for both clubs to go and play one of the bigger clubs in Derbyshire in the next round so everything is to play for.”
