More than 150 Chesterfield fans braved the cold night and long journey to Colchester to watch their side secure a battling point.
Ten man Spireites came back to earn a draw when sub Lee Novak scored his 11th goal of the season from the penalty spot moments after Macauley Bonne put the home side ahead on 69 minutes.
From the 18th minute Chesterfield had played with ten men after skipper Gary Liddle was red carded.
