Belper United took a young squad to EMCL side Blaby and Whetstone for their first pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Luke Crosby, Sam Carter, Joe Conkleton, Andy Fretwell and Ash Dhindsa may have been all missing due to work and holiday commitments, but Paul Postlethwaite still managed to give valuable minutes to Adam Robley, Dean Oliver, Brannon Meehan, Gary Conway and Adam Attwater.
As expected Blaby and Whetstone started the better side and gave United all kinds of problems down the left. At the same time Sam Vickers pace up front was giving the Blaby defence cause for concern.
Belper United took the lead on 20 minutes through Vickers. However, ten minutes later, Blaby equalised.
Both sides made numerous changes at the break and the game took a few minutes to get back into its rhythm. It was Blaby who took the lead after 70 minutes and went on to win the game 2-1.
Paul Postlethwaite said: “Blaby and Whetstone are a more experienced, strong and well-organised side from a level above and gave us an excellent workout. I am really pleased with all the squad today.”
“They gave me everything they had, especially in the extreme heat. Our defence was well organised all game, Dean Oliver didn’t stop running in the middle of the park and we got to look at a lot of new younger players who all put in commendable performances.
“Once we can start to integrate the more experienced lads back into the side over the next few games, I am sure we will be building two very good squads for the forthcoming season.”
