Ripley Town took the spoils on Saturday in the Midlands Regional Alliance Division One, beating local rivals Bargate Rovers 2-1.

Ripley travelled to take on Bargate with several players unavailable but they managed to come away with all the points, thanks to a late wonder goal in a result that now sees them very handily placed in the top four of the division, quite a turnaround after their slow start to the season.

Defending a steep slope, Town defended doggedly and relied on counter attacking football in a close first half.

Ripley eventually took the lead on 25 minutess when Nathan Gration curled home a direct free kick to edge his side in front.

Bargate hit back to level the scores ten minutes later.

The goal arrived from the penalty spot and by the time half-time was reached, the score was Bargate Rovers 1 Ripley Town 1.

Playing down the hill after the break, Ripley poured forward as Bargate found themselves camped in their own half.

But for all the pressure, it seemed the breakthrough wouldn’t come.

That was until, with six minutess to go, Jordan Fahey picked up a loose ball almost 30 yards from goal and thundered the ball home, a goal fit to win any game.

This Saturday, Ripley host league leaders Ambergate at the Nottingham Road ground, with the game starting at 2pm.
