Ambergate FC lost 4-2 to Wirksworth Ivanhoe on Saturday in Division One of the MRA.

Wirksworth were on the attack straight from the kick-off and Richard Briggs wass forced into clearing the ball off the line in the first minute.

Ambergate picked up the tempo with Jody Waldron hitting a powerful drive on the turn but the Wirksworth keeper was equal to it, turning it round the post. The corner came to nothing but led to the opening goal of the game for Wirksworth.

A long punt upfield saw goalkeeper Adam Bannister drop the ball straight onto the Wirksworth forwards feet and he calmly tucked home.

The more the first half went on, the stronger Wirksworth got with Matt Baker making a double clearance off the line from a corner. After failure to clear another corner, Wirksworth’s number eight powered home an effort from the edge of the box, in the 31st minute.

Ambergate began to raise their game with Waldron hitting the post from a tight angle before a break down the left saw Gary Conway cut inside and play the ball against the full back’s outstretched arm, for which the referee was quick to award a spot kick.

Josh Squires stepped up and coolly slotted the ball home low to the keeper’s left.

Ambergate had finally found some rhythm with Richard Briggs putting a free kick to the back stick for Waldron rise above the defence and head the ball back across goal and find Gary Conway unmarked, who headed home from six yards to bring the game level just before the break.

Half-time appeared to come at a bad time for Ambergate with Briggs forced into a last ditch tackle straight from the kick off.

It took ten minutes for the first goal of the second half to come. A Wirksworth corner found the centre back unmarked in the area and his unchallenged header found the back of the net.

As the hour mark passed, the momentum was still with Wirksworth, as their winger made a burst into the box and saw his low cross deflect in off the outstretched leg of Matt Baker.

Minutes after Wirksworth’s fourth goal, another break down the Ambergate left saw another low cross deflected goalwards but Adam Bannister was able to get down and tip it around the post.

With both teams making numerous substitutions the game fizzled out and neither team was able to muster a chance in the last ten minutes.
