A successful season for Belper Sports Ladies Football Club was capped by a league and cup double for the U14 girls’ team.
Sports not only romped to the Derbyshire Girls League title but also lifted the Challenge Cup in an unbeaten campaign, which reflected how hard they have trained and really developed their game. Some of the players had hardly played any football before they joined the club.
Coach Carl Harrison said: “The girls’ tenacity and determination have paid off. I am proud of each and every one of them. They have played 20 matches, winning 19 and drawing one. They are real champions.”
The U14s’ sister teams have also done well. The U11s were runners-up in the Derbyshire League’s Plate competition after taking Burton to extra-time in the final but losing on penalties, while the U10s reached the final of the Challenge Cup before losing 5-2 to Derby County.
U11s’ coach Giles Dann said: “They should be pleased with their performance. They were resilient and enthusiastic until the very end.”
U10s’ coach Pierre Falleth said: “What an achievement for this new team to challenge Derby and do their very best.”
Belper Sports Ladies’ secretary Kirsty Westran added: “It has been a fantastic season. The girls have grown in confidence and skill.”
