Nailers’ reserves score five in win

Radford Reserves 1

Belper Town Reserves 5

Belper travelled to Radford and recorded their first victory of 2013 but it took them a while to break down a resilient home side.

Both teams had spells of pressure in the first half but it was the Nailers who had the better chances as Ashley Hunter and Tom Hayes both went close.

Alfie Holland, who had returned from holiday, went straight into the side at left back and played particularly well as he combined with Sam Vickers down the left.

It took until five minutes before half-time for the deadlock to be broken, as the ball fell to Ryan Baker inside the box, who produced a snapshot with his right foot for the ball to fly into the roof of the net.

Soon after the restart, Belper doubled their lead from a corner. Hayes’s header was saved, Luke Bailey’s shot from the rebound was cleared off the line but Vickers lashed a left-footed strike from the edge of the box into the net.

Five minutes after, Radford halved the deficit when a well delivered free kick was headed back across the goal and the ball was bundled in from close range. This could have been a difficult spell for the Nailers, but after Ashley Smith produced a wonderful save as he tipped a long range strike over the bar, Belper rolled their sleeves up and took over for the rest of the game.

Vickers grabbed his second of the match as he danced through the Radford defence and finished confidently to re-establish the two goal lead. Blake Owen, who had worked tirelessly all game, got a deserved goal as he fired in from the edge of the box, and with a few minutes remaining, Hayes raced clear and gave the ‘keeper no chance with an assured finish.
