THE Solar Press Cup Alfreton Cup Final last Friday night was evenly contested with JACKSDALE MW just shading the opening exchanges.
However, opponents SHIRLAND MW established a foothold in the game and created the best chance of the first half when Jamie Morgan’s bullet header was well saved.
The same player created havoc in the opposition defence before being brought down to provide Shaun Archibold the opportunity to slot home the resultant penalty kick to give Shirland the second half advantage.
They held the lead until five minutes from time when Jacksdale levelled through a fine solo goal to set up the prospect of extra time. However, that man Morgan was to have the final say as he slammed the ball home from fully 25 yards out in the final minute to secure Shirland a 2-1 victory and trigger his side’s and supporters celebrations.
April showers resulted in saturated grounds that restricted the weekend programme to a single match that featured OUT OF TOWN and GLADIATORS; the visitors probably wishing this game had been called off too in the face of a 15-0 pasting.
Ben Cummins (2), Michael Hollis, Robert Spencer (4), Philip Machin, Nathan Ball (3), Peter Hague (2), Jonathan Hague and Jamie Blount scored almost at will as Town laid siege to their opponents’ goal.
Tomorrow evening (Friday) sees the Out of Town Bowl Final contested by AMBER ATHLETIC and HOLMEWOOD MW at the home of South Normanton FC. Kick-off is at 7.15 in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.
