SOUTH Normanton Athletic produced a sensational display of football at Station Road to maintain their title charge.

With skipper Benjamin Blount suspended, it was stand-in skipper Adam Nicholls who got the first two goals with a man-of-the-match display as the Shiners produced a win which could have a huge say on the title destination.

The game began with both sides pumping with anticipation. Newark were a bir, strong side and quick to get the ball, but they could not cope with the brilliant Athletic defenders Daniel Henshaw and Steve Chambers who both headed clear with aplomb throughout the game.

However, the major difference between the sides was Nicholls who opened the scoring on 12 minutes when he picked the ball up at the half-way line, beat his marker and ran at the heart of the Newark defence. He went past the last defender and shot home from 18 yards past Newark keeper Gary Atwood.

His second goal came on 72 minutes after a bombardment of Newark attacks from the start of the second half.

A cool Daniel Briscoe back pass to Daniel Riley saw him show persistence before delivering the perfect pass to Nicholls who just got his right foot to the ball from close range to double the lead.

South Normanton’s third came from Daniel Briscoe on 88 minutes. He picked the ball up from a clearance, turned and rattled a shot into the net for 3-0.

The hosts reduced the arrears in the last minute when substitute Shaun Ellison netted the Notts side’s consolation.

Referee: Gavin Rice of Newark.

This Saturday, South Normanton Athletic are at home to AFC Hucknall.
