WITH the festive season over, the Matlock and District Football League got back to business.

The new year began with Derbyshire Cup action and saw two of the league’s teams reach the semi-final stage.

Hopflower took on another Matlock league side and came out 8-1 winners against Chesterfield Town Reserves.

Meanwhile, Woodthorpe Rovers recorded a 2-1 win over Midlands Regional Alliance side Wirksworth Ivanhoe.

League action saw an Alfreton Miners Arms side shorn of the services of a number of key players take on Darley Dale.

The Miners took nothing for granted against their opponents who currently sit bottom of the league.

After a slow start to the game, SamPuttock scored his first goal of 2012 in excellent style to fire the Miners side in front.

The Miners continued to bombard the visitors but could not find the target with a number of shots going over the bar.

Darley dale pushed on, but in doing so gave the Miners the chance to covert their second, Puttock again on target with his second of the game.

Darley hit back and their front runner ran onto what appeared a sure penalty but given the fact he stayed on his feet and got his show away, the referee waved play on.

Shortly afterwards goalkeeper Gareth Wragg stopped two goalbound efforts from Darley just before half-time.

In the second half, the Miners added their third goal through captain Ross Melis.

Darley fought back and pulled one back after a defensive error and a fight-back looked on the cards when Darley slotted home their second three minutes later.

However, Miners reshaped and Puttock popped up with his third goal of the game for his second hat-trick of the season to ensure all three points and a good start for the Miners.

Other results in division one saw Chesterfield Town beat All Inn 2-1; Shirebrook beat an injury-hit Shirland side 5-2.

In Division Two, Wirksworth Albion saw off Tansley 2-0.

Further Derbyshire Cup quarter final action saw Riddings Rovers beaten 4-1 along with Laburnum saints who went down 5-1.
