Sports stars from across Amber Valley have shared £4,400 in funding that will support their bid to reach the top -- thanks to Derbyshire Sport’s business network, ICON.

The 23 athletes have each received a grant of up to £250 to help pay for travel, equipment, coaching or competition costs.

They received their cheques at a celebration event at Amber Valley Borough Council offices in Ripley, where the talented group were presented to

councillors. Each was also handed a £50 activity card to use at Alfreton Leisure Centre, Ripley Leisure Centre or William Gregg VC Leisure Centre, which will further help with their training.

All of the athletes are tipped for further success in their respective sports, and many have already represented their country.

Those to receive ICON backing include athletes Alexander Knibbs (Duffield), Katie Rowe (Alfreton), Jessica Turner (Denby Village) and Richard Weir (Riddings), archers Struan Caughey (Duffield), Alex Holmes (Ripley), Lauryn Jewkes (Kilburn) and Hollie Smith (Heanor), sailors Harvey Martin (Alfreton), Roscoe Martin (Alfreton) and Thomas Woodings (Lea) and netballers Isobel Beighton (Codnor Park) and Cherese Naylor (Codnor).

Also among the successful applicants are swimmers Jamie Ingram (South Wingfield) and Michaela Stephen (Crich), basketballer Charlie Brown (Belper), powerlifter Max Foord (Swanwick), footballer Katy Gigg (Crich), taekwondo athlete Alice Johnson (Kilburn), badminton player Grace King (Quarndon), hockey player Kathryn Lane (Idridgehay), mountaineerer Gracie Martin (Alfreton) and cyclist James Shaw (Heanor).
